Active Fashion: What’s Trending Now

by Larkin Clark

If you’re already living that athleisure life (looking at you, Californians), this is the news you’ve been waiting for. According to fitness fashion experts I recently interviewed for Well+Good, two longtime comfort staples are leading the trend pack this summer: leggings and sneakers.

Leggings have been a workout must-have since the ’80s, but only recently received the active fashion treatment. It looks like basic black is behind us, thanks to a new wave of psychedelic prints, flashy finishes, and unexpected details that make it easier to style leggings like regular clothes.

The styles to try first? According to Sarah Carlson, head of design and innovation at Athleta, hot picks are tropical florals and camo prints, though I’m personally digging the sexy as hell lace-ups that have been showing up on everyone from Rihanna to Danielle Bernstein of We Wore What.

As for sneakers, the crisp white kicks that were so popular last year have gotten a few upgrades, pastel gel soles and vintage revamps among them. Celeb stylist Djuna Bel offered a few tips for styling them with your go-to summer outfits. My favorite? A ’90s slip with low-top sneakers – because even though I’m now a laid-back Cali girl, I’ve still got NYC in my closet.
